Welcome to Explore VR With Google Cardboard. In this course, you'll learn the basics of VR development in Android.

1.1 Introduction

Hello. Welcome to the tuts+ VR for Google Cardboard on Android course. My name's Sue Smith. With the Google Cardboard SDK for Android developing virtual reality content for the platform has become much more achievable. Cardboard viewers are now readily available with a host of apps already serving VR antenna action. In this course we will set up the development environment for Virtual Reality application to an Android and we'll import the Google sample project for Cardboard. We'll use the sample to explore the vital components in a Cardboard app. And we'll make changes to various parts of it to gain a better understanding of the functionality. By building on the sample project, we can learn what's involved in developing VR for Android without worrying too much about some of the more time-consuming aspects of Cardboard development. Particularly when it comes to building the 3D shapes for your scenes. The sample app uses OpenGL to do that. But, in your own apps, you might use a third party tool like Unity. Since the sample project include shapes already defined, we can use them to learn some basic OpenGL coding. And to explore the functionality of the Cardboard app itself. We'll make a few small hacks initially to the color and shape code, and then we'll run the app to see the effect our changes have. We'll also explore how the sample Cardboard app handles user interaction. It detects both the user looking at an object and the user pressing the trigger in their Cardboard viewer. So we'll make a couple of small alterations to the interaction code and then run the app again to see the effect our changes have. At the end of the course, you will have an understanding of what's involved in developing Cardboard apps for Android. And you'll have a foundation project to refer to when you start working on your own apps.
